Do you love food, hate waste, and want to create some totally amazing technology to help change the world? If so, come join OLIO, The Food Sharing Revolution…
WHAT IS OLIO?
OLIO is a mobile app that connects neighbours with each other and local shops so that surplus food can be shared – for free or for sale – rather than thrown away. And we’re tackling a massive problem….
- Over 1/3 of all food that’s produced globally gets thrown away
- Food waste is the 3rd largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after the USA & China
- There are 800m malnourished people in the world today; and global food production needs to increase by 50-70% in 2050 to avoid mass civil unrest (source: UN & World Bank)
- The average UK family throws away over £700 of food, which is ~20% of the weekly shop
Founded by two Stanford MBAs who are passionate about food waste, and with a combined 30 years’ leadership experience, OLIO launched in North London this summer and plans to roll out across the rest of London, UK and beyond in 2016 & 2017. In the 3 months since launch, OLIO has been downloaded over 8,000 times, has trended at the top of the App Store and been featured by the BBC London News. OLIO has huge ambition, and has just secured backing from a top tier global investor.
