Head of Content

TL;DR

Hatch helps people fix the world around them. Our website is full of practical tips for what people can do to help rough sleepers, combat climate change, and much more. We’re looking for someone to take charge of all our content: someone who cares enough about what’s going on in Britain today to help the public do something about it. The job’s full time and starts in early June.

To Apply:

Please email your CV to info@hatch-uk.org. No need for a formal cover letter, but do use your email to 1) tell us why you’re applying, and 2) send us some example tools and pieces of content that you think Hatch should learn from / be all over, and 3) tell us why you’ve picked those links. Please feel free to send us examples of your own content as well, where relevant.

To help you pick the right things to show us, bear in mind that our priority is to reach those people who want to do something about the causes they care about, but who haven’t done so yet, or who have only recently started to take action.

Want to know more?

Smashing. Nice to meet you. We’re Hatch. We’re a start-up non-profit helping people fix the world around them.

We’ve started with a focus on homelessness, refugees and climate change, and are adding more topics quarter by quarter. We find out what people can actually do about the causes that inspire them. Then we make the best content we can to spread the word and connect people to the charities, campaigns & communities that can put them to work.

We’re looking for a mad genius content wizard who cares about what’s happening in the UK today, and wants to help other people do something about it. You would be ultimate supremo in charge of all our content. You’d run our editorial team, set our content strategy, build our community of contributors – and make a fair bit of content yourself too.

Right now we make videos, write socially-minded how to’s, compile lists of great things people can do – and profile the great people who do them. You’d be free to change that up as you see fit. Decide we need a podcast? Great – make a podcast. (So long as you can find the money within the budget, of course.)

You need to be a strategist and a manager, a leader and a nurturer. You need to love experimentation, bloody love metrics, and be head over heels for a good old brainstorm session. You’d be given the freedom to take the approach you think is best to reaching millions of people (eventually), successfully connecting hundreds of thousands of them to opportunities for practical action, and doing so in a way that makes them like Hatch enough to keep coming back for more – and maybe even throw us a penny or two every now and again.

Just to make it easier, you’d need to do it all on a shoestring to begin with. We’re a rapidly growing start-up, so applications that don’t mention the word ‘resourceful’ won’t be considered. 😉 On the plus side, you’d be joining a start-up on the ground floor, with incredible scope for growth.

Take a look at our website to see whether you care about the same things as us, and whether you think you could improve it. Get in touch if you do!

Key Responsibilities

Think

With input from across the organisation, set Hatch’s content strategy.
Use constant experimentation to improve our content.
Dig out new and interesting ways to produce and present content (think Flourish, Verse, Opinary, etc), and always be thinking about how we can use these tools better to give our audience the best experience we can.
Lend your brain to others in Hatch who need it, and ask others to do the same for you.

Lead

Manage and support our editorial team, presently comprising four freelancers:  a Video Lead, a Social Media Manager, and a job share Email Exec & Copywriter.
Help them do the best work they can.
Run the budget for that team, with freedom to allocate resources as you see fit.
Create a community of incredible contributors, including from amongst our audience.
Build our culture of empowerment and generosity into the DNA of both your team and the broader contributor community.

Do

Run a watertight commissioning process to ensure that we get the very best content right when we need it from the very best contributors.
Work with Hatch’s CEO, Jim Williams, and our Brand Advisor, John Duggan, to continually improve our brand and our audience experience.
Create the content that you make best, complementing the capability of your team.
Build relationships that you think will best help Hatch – whether with organisations, thought leaders or incredible content makers.

Requirements

You must be:

Perfectly confident in running a sleek commissioning process.
Sufficiently experienced to build trust with people with 5-15 years’ experience.
Obsessive about sourcing, onboarding, configuring and building with digital tools, from WordPress to Google Data Studio, via IFTTT, BuzzSumo, etc.
Passionate about tackling social and environmental injustice.
Committed to the ideals of helping people realise how powerful they are, and helping them use that power to build a better world.
Brilliant at spotting and learning from the best content out there.
Resolutely cheerful and ego-free. =)

All-Important Details:
The successful candidate will receive a full-time contract paying £38,000 per year before deductions. Six month probation; six week notice period. Jim Williams, our Founder & CEO, will be your line manager.

We work on a flexi-time basis, have a generous parental leave policy (that treats men and women equally), and provide 25 days leave per year, plus bank holidays.

Timeframe:
We close for applications at 9am on Monday 13th May. There will be two rounds of interviews, starting in late May, with the role starting immediately thereafter (or asap for those with notice).
