Working in the world of startups can become such a major part of your life that you forget what it’s like to talk to people who really don’t get it. I can’t tell you how many times someone has said to me, “Oh wow, you can code? That’s awesome!”. Seriously? No, I don’t work as a professional developer, if that’s what you’re thinking.
Here are some other wild misconceptions you may have come across:
-
Only technical people can work in startups – if you didn’t study computer science it’s not gonna happen
-
They all start off with a lump sum of venture capital funding
-
In London they need to be based in Shoreditch, in California, Silicon Valley
-
Founders can’t have a life outside their job, let alone a family
-
All startups need to address an entirely new idea
-
Either you’ll have the next Facebook or you’ll fail entirely
-
Getting additional funding isn’t that difficult if your idea is good
-
Since you’re expected to do so many different tasks, your career will lack direction
-
Only young people can work in startups
-
You have to be a mega-entrepreneur to work in a startup
